Yes

Can the HT be a tutor?

Yes if they have the time.

Can we transfer schools in our 2nd year either within the same or a different borough?

Yes - ECTs can take time served in one school to a new school in another. All ECTs must be registered with an Appropriate Body. Records are updated and maintained by the TRA.

Do we take part in the schools performance management?

No not during your induction period

Does the record of observations include the weekly 15 minute mentor ones?

Weekly mentor short observations are not formal assessments but a part of your ECF development, the mentor uses this information to guide the instructional coaching session.

Records of formal Lesson observations by induction tutor/lead each half term should be kept

How long do observations have to be?

Formal observations are for a full lesson accompanied with a lesson plan – ½ termly in year 1 and termly in Year 2

I have received a 10% reduction on normal teaching hours but have heard that it should be 15 for ECT 1. Should I be on -15% and how do we find out what is normal?

ECTs are entitled to 20% off timetable in their first year -10% PPA and an additional 10% for induction related activities. In year 2 ECTs get a total of 15% 10% PPA and a further 5% for induction relate activities.

If you have previous experience in teaching is it possible to fast track your ECT?

In regards to a reduced induction, Appropriate Body's must review each request on a case-by-case basis, reductions can only be considered where an ECT has extensive prior experience of teaching whole-classes, planning and assessment to meet all the Teachers’ Standards. Examples of when this discretion might be considered appropriate include a teacher who has taught in the independent sector for a considerable number of years or who has gained QTS via the assessment-only route.

I'm only meeting half an hour for my mentor every week. Is that meant to happen?

ECT mentor sessions should be approximately 45-50 minutes with a 10 minute short informal observation

Is it correct that the mentor doesn't do any formal observations. Only the tutor does that?

Correct – Mentors do not make judgements that inform assessment, they are there to assist your day to day development

Is our mentor and tutor the same person?

No - The mentor is your support person to help you develop and facilitates the ECF programme- your professional development entitlement

The Induction tutor does the formal observations and write the reports along with setting half termly targets in first year and termly in year 2

Is the ECT Manager portal the same as Steplab?

ECT manager is where your formal induction and progress towards meeting the Teachers Standards is recorded. The Appropriate Body use this portal to monitor and review all ECTs serving Induction. The Appropriate Body makes the final decision whether an ECT has passed or failed their induction.

Steplab is the portal that you engage with your professional development programme which is aligned with the Early career Framework. They are two separate portals

Is there a formal document for mentors to fill out during weekly meetings or do we just make notes separately on word?

Steplab on line portal for Ambition

My tutor is also my mentor. Is that normal?

Please may we draw your attention to the DfE directive on this taken from the Induction for Early Career Teachers Statutory guidance for appropriate bodies, headteachers, school staff and governing bodies 2.45.

The mentor and the induction tutor are two discrete roles with differing responsibilities and it is expected that these roles are held by different individuals. In exceptional circumstances it may be necessary for the headteacher to designate a single teacher to fulfil both roles, which may be the headteacher/principal themselves. Where this is the case the headteacher should ensure that the induction tutor understands that they are fulfilling two discrete roles and that adequate safeguards are put in place to ensure that the mentoring support offered to the ECT is not conflated with assessment of the ECT against the Teachers’ Standards.

What should be in our portfolio of evidence?

You will be assessed against the Teacher Standards, so examples or indication of where evidence is about how you are meeting the standards. lesson observations that are formal. notes re activities in your ECT time like observing other teachers in your school or elsewhere. Your induction targets, emails from parents, feedback from school/department monitoring, moderation

Where do I find Steplab for Ambition?

The Headteacher appoints the tutor
